Check out our new page all about Environmental Visual Audits, one of the key ways in which the Neighbourhood Action Group helps to improve Katesgrove. You can find information on how to join one of our monthly walks around Katesgrove, and see reports of our previous walkabouts.

If you live in Katesgrove you should have received one of our leaflets inviting you to a special public meeting of the Neighbourhood Action Group on 19th March 2009.

The meeting included talks from:

Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Sinfield and PCSO Rod Holmes of Thames Valley Police, who talked about the work our Neighbourhood Police team has been doing in the area, including the recent Street Drinking Restriction, work to tackle sat-nav and other theft from vehicles, and the new Mobile Police Station which will soon be deployed across Reading.

Carl Cox of Reading Borough Council's Streetcare team talked about the council's work on EVAs, in particular the rising graffiti problem, and new legislation which allows the council to take positive action on flytipping, and allows legal notices to be served to private landowners who ignore offers of help cleaning up their property.

We also had a detailed discussion with residents about their current concerns in Katesgrove, which included:

  • Graffiti
  • Noise nuisances
  • Litter
  • Flytipping
  • Parking
  • Burglary
  • Dog Mess
  • Drugs
  • Speeding
  • Youth ASB
  • Parking
  • 'Mini motos'

All of these concerns were taken on board by the NAG, and will have a big influence when we consider our priorities for the coming months. If you weren't able to attend but are aware of an issue we should know about, please get in touch via email to katesgrovenag@hotmail.co.uk

Reading Borough Council has a wealth of information on their website, as well as many different ways to contact them. Some of the most useful sections can help you to get action taken on simple things like graffiti and littering.

Streetcare is the main department of the council that looks after our roads and footpaths. They have a special section of contact forms that allow you to provide details of problems that they will send out people to deal with. In particular, you may find the following forms useful:

When you use these forms, the council will transfer the details onto their internal jobs list and let you know that someone will be dealing with it. You will not normally get a response when action has been taken, but hopefully you will notice that the problem has gone away!

If you are having problems near you with dog mess, the council does have a Dog Warden who I know from experience provides a very prompt service. They do not have a contact form online, but you can contact them by phone - the details can be found on this page. They also have conact numbers for dealing with stray dogs, even outside office hours.

This coming Thursday, the NAG's monthly meeting is an official open-door meeting to which all local community members are welcome to come along and find out what the Katesgrove Neighbourhood Action Group is all about. We will be joined by speakers from the various agencies we work with who will be talking about how our community co-operation is contributing to ongoing improvements in Katesgrove.

Please join us at New Christ Church Primary School (Milman Road, RG2) for a valuable opportunity to find out what we do and how you can help. If you have any questions, please email us at katesgrovenag@hotmail.co.uk
